As noted in the catalog entry for the Brain Aerobics Weekly, Kathy's focus on the topic of positive brain enhancement has three goals:

  • Reduce stress (Relaxed learners learn more)
  • Have fun (Laughter brings oxygen to your brain to literally "freshen" your thinking) and
  • Build self esteem (by exploring your strengths and interests)

This workshop provides dozens of ideas for using logic, word games, imagination, and visual perception, along with hands on opportunities to try out games, exercises and mind-stimulating products. It also offers a long list of resources. Discover great ideas for spontaneous programming that anyone can lead.

This presentation is based on Kathy's book published by Health Professions Press, Getting to Know the Life Stories of Older Adults: Activities for Building Relationships. The emphasis is on mutual understanding that arises from having fun together, and sharing our stories, values and opinions. For people in caregiving situations the participants will discover ways to:

  • Learn their care receivers' stories, interests and preferences
in delightful, memorable, and often spontaneous ways
  • Discover techniques for fostering a two-way relationship,
where we care about individuals, not just for them.

Most of the exercises can be used intergenerationally or with children and young adults and also can be adapted for people with dementia or for one-on-one situations such as assisting with care or for family visits. Come for the exercises and fun, the ideas and insights and the lists of resources.

foto hereSensitivity to Aging Workshop

In many business and healthcare settings, staff and volunteers have kind intentions, but often know little about geriatrics. This workshop will help improve client and staff satisfaction by increasing sensitivity to the challenges faced by older adults in seven areas:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Mobility
  • Memory loss
  • Pain
  • Medication issues
  • Caregiver needs

Cultivate your staff, and your clients will reap the harvest. This course comes with a booklet for each participant providing practical tips and insight.

Most of us do not learn best from dull texts and lectures. We learn first, because the material has relevance to us, and second, because it is presented in an engaging and memorable way. Courses in creative training techniques are readily found, but most are focused on business settings, not healthcare. This train-the-trainer workshop will teach you to make your training more enjoyable and memorable using humor, games, metaphors, optical illusions and more to teach classes on aging, dementia care and related fields.
